Babylonian astronomers divided the sun's path into twelve equal 30-degree signs around the 5th century BCE. Greek zodiakos means little animal figure. The system passed to Egypt, Rome, and eventually your newspaper.
Assessment: Fully documented in astronomical tablets. The zodiac has a birthday, and it is younger than Genesis.

The gospel in the stars
Jordan Maxwell, Acharya S, and Santos Bonacci argue that scripture encodes the zodiac: twelve disciples as twelve signs, the fish symbol as the incoming Age of Pisces, the resurrection as the sun's rebirth at the winter solstice. The Bible, in this reading, is astronomy wearing robes.
Assessment: The strongest version of the claim collapses on chronology: constellation boundaries were fixed by the International Astronomical Union in 1930, and the 'Age of Pisces' concept is 20th-century astrology, per University of Chicago astronomer Noel Swerdlow. Solar metaphors in scripture are real; the full zodiac blueprint is not demonstrated.

The shepherds' sky clock
The story as the ancients lived it: the signs were a calendar before they were a horoscope, telling farmers when floods came and shepherds when lambing started. The ram, the bull, the twins were mnemonics hung on the sky for people who could not read.
Assessment: Plausible and partially documented: zodiacal signs did anchor agricultural and civil calendars. The cozy shepherd imagery is modern embroidery. The real story is bureaucratic: Babylonian astronomers standardized the sky, and everyone inherited their filing system.
