Zhou Dunyi

joh doon-yee
The Song dynasty scholar who drew the Taiji Diagram and wrote its 260-character Explanation, rebooting Confucianism for a thousand years.
Documented

The Taijitu shuo

Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073) published the Explanation of the Taiji Diagram: from wuji to taiji, taiji moves and generates yang, stills and generates yin, the two modes differentiate into the five phases, and through them all things are born. His student-adjacent heirs, the Cheng brothers and later Zhu Xi, built Neo-Confucianism on it.

Assessment: Documented: the treatise is short, extant, and foundational.
Stories

The Taoist hand-me-down

The scandal whispered since the Song: the diagram was not Confucian at all. It descends from Taoist inner-alchemy charts, reportedly traced to the recluse Chen Tuan, passed to Zhou possibly through Mu Xiu. Confucian orthodoxy spent centuries alternately denying and absorbing this.

Assessment: Stories: the transmission chain has real documentation, but every link is contested by someone with a sect to defend.
Interesting claims

Stillness as engine

The treatise's stranger claim: ultimate stillness is not the end of motion but its source. The sage 'stills himself' to become the pivot of transformation, cosmology as operating instructions for a human being. Taijiquan's alternation of full and empty is this sentence turned into muscle.

Assessment: Interesting: the text says it plainly; the martial-art reading came centuries later but fits without forcing.

Worth asking

Where did the diagram come from, and why does its provenance still embarrass everyone?
