Valentinus

val-un-TY-nus
The 2nd-century teacher whose followers built gnosticism's most elegant system: thirty aeons, the Sophia crisis, three classes of humanity. Tertullian says he nearly became bishop of Rome.
Documented

The theologian in the church

Valentinus taught in Rome from roughly 136 to 160 CE, inside the church, honored as a teacher; Tertullian reports he expected to be made bishop, was passed over in favor of a confessor who had survived persecution, and broke with the church, though the Valentinians themselves claimed they never left, attending the same congregations while holding the deeper teaching. His school produced the Ptolemaeus-Heracleon-Marcus generation, the Tripartite Tractate, and most plausibly the Gospel of Truth, a meditation on ignorance as the Father's deficiency and gnosis as the Name being called. The Valentinian system, Pleroma of thirty aeons, Sophia's passion, the threefold anthropology, is the most complete alternative Christianity that antiquity documented.

Assessment: The Roman career, the Tertullian election report, the school's output, and the Gospel of Truth attribution are documented. The near-bishop detail rests on a hostile witness, filed as such.
Stories

The three humanities

The Valentinians sorted everyone into three natures: hylics, of matter, who cannot be saved; psychics, of soul, the ordinary church Christians, saved through faith and works; and pneumatics, of spirit, the gnostics, saved by nature, the spark being indestructible. The folk scandal is the elitism: the ordinary faithful are the middle class of salvation, and the gnostic is born, not made, which the churches heard, correctly, as a claim that their own sacraments were remedial school. The system's grace note: the pneumatics were told to stay in church and teach, the elite as faculty, which is why Valentinianism was the heresy the bishops could not see from the pulpit.

Assessment: The threefold anthropology is documented in Irenaeus and the Excerpts of Theodotus. The stay-and-teach instruction is documented in the school's own texts.
Interesting claims

The runner-up as the real winner

The claim: Valentinus is the archive's proof that the deepest subversion is internal, no sect, no schism, just a teacher inside the congregation re-describing everything the congregation said, the aeons as the inner Godhead, the resurrection as awakening, the church as a school with a hidden curriculum, and the bishop's office going to the confessor while the theology went to the teacher, an arrangement that has repeated in every institution since: the title and the influence parting at the election. Verdict: the archive keeps Tertullian's bitter detail as the whole lesson: the church chose the man who suffered for the faith over the man who explained it, and the explanation walked across the street and outlasted the explanation-chooser's entire organizational advantage. The Gospel of Truth is still in print. The bishop's name, per the record, was Pius. One of them is still teaching.

Worth asking

If the runner-up for bishop built Christianity's deepest alternative system, what did the winner actually win, and what did the loser keep?
