Theosophy

Greek theosophia, divine wisdom
The 1875 movement that smuggled Eastern vocabulary into Western drawing rooms.
Documented

The conduit is documented

Blavatsky founded the Theosophical Society in 1875. Through it, karma, reincarnation, chakras, and meditation entered Western popular vocabulary, later flowing to Gandhi's circle, the Indian independence movement, and eventually the wellness industry.

Assessment: Fully documented influence. Whatever one thinks of the doctrine, the pipeline is historical fact.
Stories

The masters in Tibet

The society's own story: Blavatsky channeled the Mahatmas, hidden adepts in Tibet who dictated the secret doctrine through her letters and trances. The letters kept arriving even when investigators were watching.

Assessment: The claims are documented; the Mahatmas are not. The 1885 Society for Psychical Research report called her one of history's most accomplished impostors, and her followers treat the report as proof of persecution. Both facts belong on the shelf.
Interesting claims

The fringe that won

The uncomfortable observation: Theosophy's core claims were derided as fantasy in 1880, and diluted versions of them, karma, energy, higher selves, ancient wisdom, are now the default vocabulary of global wellness culture.

Assessment: Not a theory, a pattern. The loudest echo of the twentieth century may be one no one notices because it won so completely it became wallpaper.
