Pu appears across the Dao De Jing (chapters 15, 19, 28, 32, 37, 57) as the symbol of original simplicity: chapter 28, 'when the block is carved, it becomes tools; the sage uses it and becomes the leader.' The image pairs with su, undyed silk. Uncarved and undyed: the pre-social human.
Wellness culture reads pu as permission to unlearn everything and call it growth: detox from names, brands, ambition. The block becomes a brand, which is the one thing the block cannot survive being.
The harder reading: the block is not innocence, it is latency. A thing already carved can be one thing; the uncarved can be anything. Nobody, in this frame, is not an absence of identity but the retention of all of them, the unspent self.
Is education a carving or an amputation?
