The Unborn Ocean

Afar triple junction, 30 million years running
The only place on Earth where a continental rift is caught mid-transition into an oceanic rift: three plates pulling apart at one point, with an ocean scheduled to fill the gap in five to ten million years.
Documented

Three arms, one exit wound

The Afar Depression is the on-land meeting point of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and East African rifts, spreading for about thirty million years; seafloor spreading in the Gulf of Aden arm began around twenty million years ago. When stretched crust thins below roughly fifteen kilometers, it enters necking, after which breakup is effectively inevitable. The Turkana Rift entered necking about four million years ago, suspiciously close to the age of the earliest hominin fossils found there.

Assessment: Documented: magnetic, seismic, and GPS records across all three arms. The oceanization sequence is observed, not theorized.
Stories

The two-continents headline

The viral version says Africa is splitting in two, which is true and useless: the Somali plate will someday carry Somalia, eastern Ethiopia, and parts of Kenya and Tanzania away as a separate landmass, in five to ten million years. The crack-of-the-week framing misses that the machinery has been running since before humans existed.

Assessment: Stories: the headline is correct about the destination and dishonest about the clock.
Interesting claims

The fossil coincidence

The necking date for the Turkana Rift matches the burst of early hominin finds, and researchers suggest the link is real: a rift entering necking accumulates sediment fast, building the perfect archive for bones. The same tear that will someday drown the region is the reason we have its fossils.

Assessment: Interesting: the rift is both the filing cabinet and the eventual flood.

Worth asking

The Atlantic opened the same way. If we can watch the whole birth this time, what do the old oceans' birth certificates still hide?
