Ophite, from ophis, serpent, is the heresiologists' collective label for several sects, Naassenes, Peratae, Sethians in part, whose Genesis reading inverted the standard one: the serpent brought the knowledge of good and evil, gnosis, against the creator's explicit command, making the snake the first liberator and the prohibition the Demiurge's security policy. Irenaeus, Hippolytus, and Epiphanius report Ophite systems, diagrams, and, most sensationally, a eucharist using a live snake coiled around the bread, the snake-worship detail being the accusation's centerpiece. The Apocryphon of John's eagle on the Tree and the wider Sethian rehabilitation of the serpent's teaching role give the reports textual support, though the sects' own self-descriptions are lost.
The folk Ophite reading is the archive's favorite inversion in its purest form: Eden as the first cover-up, the tree as the classified file, the serpent as the whistleblower who leaked the contents to the inmates, and the expulsion as the retaliation, every element of the standard story kept and re-signed, the warden's curse on the snake being the oldest punishment of a leaker on record. The reading survives everywhere the snake gets sympathy: the romantic Satan of the poets, the light-bringer of the occult revival, the archive's own Trickster file, the benefactor punished by the administration being the same figure with or without feathers.
The claim: the Ophites are the archive's control case for heretical method, not a doctrine but a reading practice, take the founding text and ask who benefits from each command, and the serpent is just the first answer that practice produced: the one who said try it to the inmates of a garden whose warden said do not ask. Verdict: the archive neither honors nor hangs the snake, it files the method: every text with a prohibition contains an Ophite reading, and the prohibition's author is always the suspect. The heresy-hunters burned the Ophites' books and kept their question, which has been asked of every scripture, constitution, and terms-of-service since. The snake's curriculum was one word long. The expulsion, per Genesis, was immediate. Per the Ophites, so was the diploma.
If the serpent was the teacher and the prohibition was the prison rule, what else in the instruction manual was written by the guards?
