The Limits of Vision

the Schopenhauer sentence
the cage you cannot see because it is built out of seeing
Documented

Parerga and Paralipomena

Arthur Schopenhauer published the sentence in Parerga und Paralipomena (1851): Jeder Mensch nimmt die Grenzen seines eigenen Gesichtsfeldes fur die Grenzen der Welt. It sits inside his larger system where the world as representation is constituted by the perceiving subject, argued at length in The World as Will and Representation (1818).

Assessment: Documented in the primary text, inside a worked-out metaphysics.
Stories

The quote-mill version

Motivational circulation trims it to: think bigger. The prison blueprint becomes an encouragement to travel, read more, and follow different accounts.

Assessment: The story sells window-widening as escape.
Interesting claims

The interface reading

The modern structural version: Donald Hoffman's Interface Theory of Perception, in The Case Against Reality (2019), argues evolution shapes perception for fitness, not truth, making the senses a desktop, not a window. Schopenhauer's sentence becomes a testable research program.

Assessment: Interesting: the metaphysics found a mathematics, whether or not the mathematics holds.
