The Information Catastrophe

Vopson, AIP Advances, 2020
Physicist Melvin Vopson's forecast: if information has mass, humanity's exponential data production is a planetary physics event, bits outnumbering atoms in about 350 years, data power demand exceeding total planetary consumption in about 300.
Documented

The papers

Documented: Vopson's mass-energy-information equivalence principle (AIP Advances 2019), extending Landauer's principle, assigns a stored bit a mass of about 3.19 x 10^-38 kg at room temperature. The Information Catastrophe (AIP Advances, August 2020) extrapolates at 20 percent annual growth: bits exceed Earth's atoms around year 350, data power exceeds 18.5 TW around year 300, digital content passes half Earth's mass around year 500. A 2022 paper proposed the positron annihilation experiment to test whether bits have mass at all.

Assessment: Documented: the journal papers, the numbers, the proposed experiment. The forecast is an extrapolation published as a warning, assumptions stated on page one.
Stories

The fifth state

The 2025 extension, documented in AIP Advances: the second law of infodynamics, information entropy decreasing as the universe self-organizes, with gravity reinterpreted as a computational compression process, matter pulled together because the universe is tidying its data. Vopson presents this as evidence consistent with a simulated universe. Mainstream response treats the principle as unverified conjecture; no experiment has yet measured the mass of a bit.

Assessment: Interesting: the chain of papers is real and peer-reviewed. The chain of inferences from Landauer to simulation is the contested part, and the experiment remains unfunded and unrun.

The apocalypse market

The pattern the archive tracks: the catastrophe forecast traveled from physics journal to popular press to theology in under five years, Satanaeon harvesting it for a gnostic eschaton, simulation channels for proof of the Matrix. Vopson himself courts the simulation reading, Reality Reloaded, 2023. The archive notes the rarity: this time the physicist and the mystics are reading the same extrapolation, and each calls the other's reading the metaphor.

Assessment: Interesting: one equation, three apocalypses. The bit's mass is 10^-38 kilograms; the narrative's mass is immeasurable.
