The Illuminati

thuh ih-LOO-mih-NAH-tee
A real secret society founded in Bavaria in 1776, abolished by 1785, and resurrected ever since as the all-purpose name for hidden world control.
Documented

The documented order

Adam Weishaupt founded the Order of the Illuminati at Ingolstadt on May 1, 1776, an Enlightenment fraternity aiming to infiltrate Masonic lodges and civil institutions against clerical and monarchical power, growing to perhaps 2,000-2,500 members across Europe. Bavaria's Elector Karl Theodor banned secret societies in 1784 and the order by name in 1785; Weishaupt fled, members recanted, and the organization's papers were seized and published, the rare conspiracy with a complete police file.

Assessment: Fully documented, founding to suppression. The historical Illuminati did not survive the 1780s in any traceable form, which is the archive's favorite irony about it.
Stories

The immortal brand

The folk career began at its death: Barruel's 1797 Memoirs blamed the suppressed order for the French Revolution, and the name has since been assigned to the Federal Reserve, the entertainment industry, and every upward hand on a dollar bill. The documented pattern: each era's Illuminati is that era's actual elite anxiety wearing the Bavarian costume, exactly Vallée's display logic applied to conspiracy.

Assessment: The Barruel origin of the myth is documented. The modern attributions are documented as mythology, and their persistence despite a complete police archive is the archive's standing case study in narrative immunity.
Interesting claims

The decoy order

The claim: the Illuminati's function is misdirection, a loud, documented, safely dead order absorbing the suspicion aimed at quieter networks, the light-bearers as the blackout curtain. The counter inside the eso file: no evidence connects 1785 to any successor, and the decoy theory is unfalsifiable by construction.

Assessment: The decoy claim is self-sealing and documented as such. The verified residue is the lesson: real secret orders get police files; imaginary ones get music videos.

Why does the one secret society we can fully document get credited with everything we cannot?
