The Fermi Paradox

lunch at Los Alamos, 1950
Billions of stars, billions of planets, eons of time, and total silence. Where is everybody?
Documented

A napkin calculation that refuses to die

At Los Alamos in 1950, Fermi ran rough numbers: even at slow ship speeds, a colonizing civilization could cross the galaxy in a few million years, a rounding error of cosmic time, so their absence is itself data. SETI has listened since 1960 without a confirmed signal. The documented answer menu is long: life is rare, intelligence is rare, civilizations self-destruct, distances and energy budgets forbid travel, we are early, we are being ignored, or contact is deliberately withheld, the zoo hypothesis.

Assessment: The arithmetic and the silence are documented facts; every resolution is hypothesis. The honest state of the field is that one question has generated thousands of papers and zero evidence capable of choosing among them.

The dark forest and other campfire answers

The public adopted the paradox through fiction's bleakest answer: Liu Cixin's dark forest, where every civilization stays silent because every other civilization is a potential hunter, and the first to broadcast is the first to be shot. It is the paradox rewritten as horror, and it is now the default explanation at every dinner party where this comes up.

Assessment: The dark forest is documented as a novel, not as a finding. Its logic assumes motives and capabilities no one has observed, and its popularity says more about human intuitions of strangers than about aliens.
Interesting claims

Silence as the message

The interesting claims cluster where evidence thins: that the silence is engineered, a quarantine, a simulation boundary, or a rule that advanced minds shed matter and leave the visible universe altogether, the transcension hypothesis. In these readings the empty sky is not absence; it is the occupied sign turned away from us.

Assessment: Each of these is unfalsifiable as stated, which is precisely why they thrive. The documented record supports exactly one conclusion: no signal confirmed, as of today. Everything past that sentence is literature.

Worth asking

Every proposed answer is a mirror: paranoid universe, dead universe, young universe, watched universe. Which reflection frightens you least?
