The Heliopolitan genealogy is the most complete creation record Egypt left: from the primordial waters of Nun rises the mound, and on it Atum, self-begotten, who produces Shu, air, and Tefnut, moisture; they produce Geb, earth, and Nut, sky; and Geb and Nut produce Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys, order and chaos paired as two couples. The Egyptian name, pesedjet, psḏt, simply means the Nine, which the Greeks calqued as enneas. The Pyramid Texts of Dynasties V and VI already speak of a Great Ennead, a Lesser Ennead, a Dual Ennead, and Seven Enneads, and Seti I of Dynasty XIX built a mortuary temple whose ennead included three deified forms of himself, the earliest documented case of a politician appointing himself to the board.
Heliopolis was never the only office. Memphis ran the Memphite Theology, creation by Ptah's heart and tongue, and Hermopolis ran the Ogdoad, eight frog-and-snake primordials doing the heavy lifting before the Nine clocked in, while nearby priests of Ptah celebrated their god as singularly superior to the Nine. Egyptian religion held the rival accounts simultaneously and considered no single one more true, the truth being the mix, a tolerance modern readers keep mistaking for confusion. The tradition's own note: the Ennead won the branding war anyway, it is the Nine who got quoted by the channelers, not the Ogdoad, nobody cold-calls eight frogs.
The claim: the Ennead did not retire. In December 1952, at Andrija Puharich's Round Table Foundation in Maine, the channeled entities calling themselves the Nine Principles of God were later identified, through Phyllis Schlemmer's spokesman Tom in Stuart Holroyd's 1977 Prelude to the Landing on Planet Earth, as the Heliopolitan Ennead itself, Tom as Atum, and the claim ran for decades through Lab Nine, the 1993 compilation The Only Planet of Choice, and sessions attended by Gene Roddenberry. Verdict: the theology is documented for four and a half millennia, the channeling is documented for seventy years, and the identification between them is the channelers' own. The archive files both records in full and notes the asymmetry: the gods left inscriptions, the board left minutes. Cross-file: The Nine, Heliopolis.
If the nine who made the world are a family tree with job titles, why did every later age, from Seti I to a Maine channeling circle, want a seat at that exact table?
