The Earthly Branches

URTH-lee BRAN-chiz
The twelve cyclical signs carrying the zodiac animals, zi through hai: the lower half of every pillar, governing months, double-hours, and directions, and hiding the secret stems inside each animal.
Documented

Zi through hai

The shi er di zhi, twelve earthly branches, zi, chou, yin, mao, chen, si, wu, wei, shen, you, xu, hai, are the twelve-position cycle older than its animal labels: the branches divided the day into twelve double-hours, the year into twelve months keyed to the solar terms, and the compass into twelve directions, the animals, rat through pig, being documented later mnemonics, popular by the Han, fixed on the branches for a population that could not all read. Each branch carries a documented portfolio: an animal, a two-hour watch, a month, a direction, a yin or yang polarity, and the hidden stems, the next entry's file, so that the placemat's animal is the label on a cabinet with several drawers.

Assessment: The twelve branches, their time and direction functions, and the animals' mnemonic status are documented. The archive files the animal as packaging, which the tradition itself says.
Stories

The watches and the directions

The folk machinery still runs on the branches' day jobs: the double-hours, zi the rat's hour, deep night, the year's months keyed to Beginning of Spring rather than the lunar new year, this wing's Lichun entry holding that dispute, and the directions that wire the branches into feng shui, the archive's Fu Shui file, the same twelve signs ruling your birth chart and your front door's compass reading. The tradition's note on the animals' late arrival: the cycle ran centuries before the rat boarded, meaning the zodiac's fur is a coat of paint on an older engine, and the engine was a clock, not a menagerie.

Assessment: The double-hours, the solar-term months, and the compass integration are documented. The animal labels' lateness is documented sinology.
Interesting claims

The container as the doctrine

The claim: the earthly branch is the archive's favorite data structure in any divination system, a single sign publicly displayed with documented hidden contents, the animal as interface, the hidden stems as payload, so that the tradition's core teaching is built into its file format: what a thing presents is not what a thing contains, and the reader's job is the cabinet, not the label. Verdict: the archive applies the format to its own shelf: every entry here is a branch, the title the animal, the tiers the hidden stems, and the reader who stops at the placemat gets the placemat's worth. The rat runs from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. The archive's readers know what else runs then. The hour pillar, per the tradition, is the inner desires. The night watch, per the tradition, belongs to the animal that works unseen. The system, per the archive, knows exactly what it filed there.

Worth asking

If each animal is a box with hidden contents, what is the animal, the cargo, or the label?
