Figures

Richard Wilhelm

RIK-hahrt VIL-helm
The German missionary-scholar in Qingdao who translated the I Ching and the Golden Flower, and who, by Jung's account, stopped translating China and started being translated by it.
Documented

The documented transmission

Documented: Wilhelm, sent to Qingdao in 1899, studied under the elderly Confucian master Lao Naixuan, produced the German I Ching (1924) that remains a standard, and the Golden Flower (1929). Jung's memorial essay records the arc, Wilhelm shedding the missionary posture, entering the texts as a pupil, and Jung crediting him with an Archimedean point from which the Western attitude of mind can be shaken. Later sinology (Cleary, the Mori-Esposito dating) finds his Golden Flower edition corrupted and his Tang-dynasty and Nestorian provenance speculations erroneous.

Assessment: The translations' influence is documented and enormous; the textual defects are documented too. Both truths sit in the same file: the faulty edition changed the West.
Stories

The sage of the old school

The folk figure is the meeting: a German pastor and a driven-out sage of the old school, Lao Naixuan, collaborating through the fall of the empire, producing the edition of the I Ching with its commentary while the civilization that wrote it burned its own furniture for heat. Wilhelm is filed as the archive's model of reception done humbly, and of its cost, his health never recovered from the China years.

Assessment: The collaboration and its circumstances are documented in Jung's memoir and Wilhelm's own prefaces. The cost narrative is biographical record, not legend.
Interesting claims

The inverted mission

The claim: Wilhelm is the control system's counter-move in reverse, a man sent to overwrite a culture who instead carried its exit manual out, the missionary position inverted. The plainer esoteric reading: some transmissions choose their couriers, and the courier's dossier never matters to the package.

Assessment: The inversion is documented as biography. The choosing is the archive's language. Either way the file notes the pattern: the best transmissions arrive disguised as their opposite.

Worth asking

When the missionary becomes the transmission line, which direction is the mission running?
