The Soviet campaign that replaced genetics with ideology-compliant biology: crops would learn to be better, genes were a bourgeois fiction, and millions starved inside the experiment.
Documented
The documented machinery
Lysenko's vernalization claims from the late 1920s, cold-treating seeds to force traits, escalated into a full doctrine: acquired characteristics are inherited, Mendelian genes do not exist. At the 1948 session of the Lenin Academy of Agricultural Sciences, with Stalin's explicit backing, the doctrine became mandatory; opponents were dismissed, exiled, or arrested. Nikolai Vavilov, the era's greatest plant geneticist and Lysenko's former mentor, starved in Saratov prison in 1943. Crop failures compounded through the 1930s-50s, and Mao's China imported the doctrine into its own famine.
Assessment: Documented to the last memo, and not ambiguous: this is the archive's clearest case of science murdered by administration. The death toll runs through the famine statistics, not the journals.
Stories
The peasant wizard story
The folk tier is the story Lysenko sold and the public bought: a barefoot agronomist outsmarting the professors, nature yielding to will, transformation by faith and hard work. It is the alchemist narrative with a party card, and it resonated because it promised that biology, like history, was on the side of the people.
Assessment: Documented propaganda craft. The story was engineered, but it worked because it told the audience what the archive keeps finding: people adopt the theory that flatters the world they want, and charisma outruns data when the stakes are bread.
Interesting claims
The epigenetic afterlife
The interesting claim is the modern echo Lysenko's defenders reach for: transgenerational epigenetic inheritance, trauma and diet leaving chemical marks on gene expression across generations, superficially resembles inheritance of acquired characteristics. Some popular accounts float a partial rehabilitation. The mechanism differs fundamentally, no new genes, no directed adaptation, effects fading within generations, and the resemblance is rhetorical, not vindication.
Assessment: Documented that epigenetic inheritance exists in limited form; documented equally that it rehabilitates nothing. Lysenkoism stands as the file on what happens when the conclusion is chosen first: the data are not refuted, they are arrested.
