Hylic

HY-lik
Of matter; the lowest of the three classes of humanity in Valentinian anthropology, matter-souls incapable of salvation, below the psychic church-goers and the pneumatic gnostics.
Documented

The threefold sorting

The Valentinian anthropology, documented in Irenaeus and the Excerpts of Theodotus, divides humanity by substance: hylics, from hylē, matter, the earthly who perish with matter; psychics, from psychē, soul, the ordinary Christians, saved by faith and works through the Demiurge's church; and pneumatics, from pneuma, spirit, the gnostics, saved by nature, their seed of the Mother being indestructible. The sorting is ontological, not moral: no hylic can earn spirit, no pneumatic can lose it, salvation being a matter of what you are made of, with Adam himself composed of all three layers so that his descendants inherit their class at birth.

Assessment: The three classes, their etymologies, and the predestinarian structure are documented. The archive notes this is the most anti-democratic anthropology in the ancient record, which is why the winning church, whatever else it taught, kept the door nominally open.

The velvet rope of salvation

The folk scandal of the hylic doctrine is its finality: the material person is not wicked, just wallpaper, unable to receive the teaching no matter how it is presented, which the Valentinians used to explain exactly the phenomenon the archive tracks, why some audiences hear the same words as revelation and others as noise. The psychic tier kept the church necessary, the hylic tier kept it humble, and the pneumatic tier kept the gnostic certain, a sociology of salvation so convenient for the saved that the heresy-hunters treated it as the school's tell: the system that flatters its adherents' file classification.

Assessment: The doctrine's use and the patristic response are documented. The flattery diagnosis is Irenaeus's own, which the archive preserves.
Interesting claims

The classification that classified itself

The claim: the hylic tier is the archive's standard for every gatekeeping taxonomy since, the sorting of audiences into those who can receive and those who cannot, and its historical irony is total: the pneumatics, saved by nature, left no church, no canon of their own, and survive only in the jar their enemies' century buried, while the psychics' remedial church runs the building, which suggests the classification worked in reverse, the material church outlasting the spiritual elite two millennia to nothing. Verdict: the archive delivers the verdict the doctrine begs for: any system that sorts humanity into keepers and furniture will eventually be judged by its own sorting, and the furniture, it turns out, held the building up. Hylē is matter. Matter is what persists. The pneumatics filed the hylics as the stuff that perishes. The record shows whose paperwork survived. Check the filing cabinet: it is made of wood.

Worth asking

If a third of humanity is matter by nature, who classified them, and what does the classifier's own filing cabinet look like?
