Figures

Hermes Trismegistus

HUR-meez tris-muh-JIS-tus
The thrice-greatest sage, fusion of Greek Hermes and Egyptian Thoth, to whom the Hermetica were ascribed, and whose dating error redirected the entire Renaissance.
Documented

The documented correction

Documented: Hermetic texts were composed in Greek, largely 1st-3rd centuries CE, in Greco-Egyptian Alexandria, blending Platonism, Egyptian religion, and Jewish lore. Ficino's 1471 Latin Corpus Hermeticum, prioritized over Plato on Cosimo's order, launched Renaissance Hermeticism on the belief that Hermes predated and foretold Christianity. Casaubon's 1614 philological analysis redated the corpus to late antiquity, collapsing the prisca theologia claim and helping reroute intellectual culture toward the new science.

Assessment: The redating is documented and decisive. The tradition's post-1614 survival, through Bruno's memory, Fludd, Freemasonry, and the Kybalion, is the documented record of an authority that outlived its credentials.
Stories

Thoth with a Greek passport

The folk figure is the fusion itself: Thoth, ibis-headed scribe of the gods, inventor of writing, measurer of time, married to Hermes the messenger and psychopomp, producing the sage who is both the god of writing and the writer of gods. The Emerald Tablet's invented antiquity and the Kybalion's invented lineage both run on his reputation, two thousand years apart, same brand.

Assessment: The Thoth-Hermes syncretism is documented from Hellenistic Egypt. The brand's reuse across millennia is the archive's standing case of authority as renewable resource.
Interesting claims

The scribe of the exit file

The claim: Hermes-Thoth is the archive's patron figure, the god of the boundary who ferries souls, writes the laws, and invented the technology, writing, by which the prison keeps its records and the prisoner keeps the key. His triple greatness reads as the three planes; his texts keep appearing wherever the exit literature surfaces.

Assessment: The psychopomp and scribal portfolios are documented mythology. The patron-of-the-archive reading is the site's own, filed as such.

Worth asking

If the wisdom was never ancient, was the authority ever the point?
