Echo

EK-oh
A reflected sound; originally the Oread nymph whom Hera cursed to repeat only the last words spoken to her.
Documented

The curse on Mount Cithaeron

In Ovid's Metamorphoses, Echo, the talkative Oread, covered for Zeus's affairs by distracting Hera with chatter. Hera's punishment: you will keep your voice but never lead it, able only to answer, only to repeat the last words. Loving Narcissus, she could not speak first; spurned, she wasted to bones and then to voice alone. The Greeks said she still hides in the hills, answering anyone who calls.

Assessment: Ovid, Metamorphoses 3, is the canonical text; the word itself simply means sound, echo, in Greek.
Stories

The older, harsher version

A second tradition skips Narcissus: Echo rejected Pan, and the god drove shepherds mad until they tore her limb from limb, leaving only the voice, which the earth hid so it could keep mocking. Both versions agree on the residue: nothing but sound. The Greeks built porticoes named for her, one at Hermione with a threefold echo, one at Olympia with a sevenfold.

Assessment: Both traditions are documented, Pausanias records the echo-halls. The phenomenon outlived every version of the myth.
Interesting claims

The curse is now the business model

The claim: modern media is Echo industrialized, voices rewarded precisely for repeating the last words spoken to them, originality punished as heresy against the chorus, and the wasting-away continues: say only what is already said and watch the self reduce to resonance. Verdict: the mechanism is visible in any feed, but the myth cuts deeper than the analogy, Echo's punishment was imposed; the modern version is opted into, which makes it not a curse but a career. Hera would call that progress.
