Balenciaga is the founder's Basque surname, the house founded in San Sebastian and moved to Paris in 1937. Harvard medieval Latinist Jan Ziolkowski told AFP the name cannot be wrenched into Latin: Baal is king would be Baal est rex, and neither enci nor aga appears in Latin dictionaries. The viral screenshot was a Google Translate glitch, and the interface itself suggested reading the phrase as Sepedi, a Bantu language.
The claim detonated in December 2022, days after the brand's campaign-photo scandal, when anger was already searching for confirmation. A stylized BAALENCIAGA spelling on caution tape in one shot became the wick: split it, translate it, convict it. Snopes tested the trick and got the translator to render even Snopes enci aga as something ominous.
The machine did not lie, it complied. Feed noise to a translation engine and it returns a sentence, because declining is not in its design spec. A tool built to always answer became a tool that always confirms.
When the oracle is a translation box guessing between Latin and Sepedi, who is actually speaking?
