Humanity builds one city with one language and one tower. The response from above: scatter them and scramble the speech. The question is what was so threatening.
Documented
The tower has a real address
The story sits on documented foundations: the great ziggurat of Babylon, Etemenanki, 'house of the foundation of heaven and earth,' stood seven tiers high and was rebuilt and destroyed across centuries. Babel is Babylon, the same word. The motif of confounded speech attaches to a real city famous for its multilingual empire.
Assessment: Documented archaeologically and textually. The Etemenanki foundation records survive. The myth grew on a real tower's footprint.
Stories
The scattering that explains the map
As the tradition used it: this is the answer to why nations speak differently, one morning's confusion becoming the world's language families. Missionaries carried the story globally and found local versions waiting, from the Popol Vuh's scattered peoples to African tower traditions.
Assessment: Documented linguistics gives the story an honest substrate: language families really do branch and scatter from common ancestors, just over millennia, not mornings. The folk tier is a true process wearing a mythical timestamp.
Interesting claims
The suppression reading
Wallis's signature case: the Babel intervention is the elohim deliberately breaking a unified, capable humanity, 'nothing they plan will be impossible' read as a manager's threat assessment. On this reading, division was the point, and every subsequent fragmentation of human knowledge is the same policy. Eden, the Flood, Babel: three operations, one containment program.
Assessment: The motive clause in Genesis 11:6 is quoted correctly, and it is genuinely odd as divine behavior. The containment-program reading explains the oddity by making the actors mortal managers, which is the one step the text cannot confirm. The verse is strange enough to keep the card.

Worth asking
The text says the intervention happened because unified humans could do anything. Who, exactly, was that a threat to?
