Civilizations

Atlantis

Plato, c. 360 BC
The most famous lost civilization that almost certainly never existed.
Documented

Plato made it up, and told us why

Atlantis appears in exactly two works, Plato's Timaeus and Critias, as a cautionary tale: a wealthy naval power corrupted by greed, destroyed by the gods, contrasted with ideal Athens. No source before Plato mentions it. No geology supports a sunken Atlantic continent.

Assessment: The scholarly consensus is overwhelming. It is philosophy, not history.
Stories

A memory of Thera

Some historians suggest Plato's tale garbled a real event: the eruption of Thera (Santorini) around 1600 BC, which devastated Minoan Crete, an actual advanced sea power.

Assessment: A respectable hypothesis, unprovable. It explains the story's power without requiring a lost continent.
Interesting claims

A real Ice Age advanced civilization

Authors like Ignatius Donnelly (1882) and Graham Hancock (today) argue Atlantis was a genuine advanced culture destroyed at the end of the last Ice Age, its survivors seeding Egypt, the Maya, and Sumer. This now drives massive online audiences and Netflix series.

Assessment: No artifact, genetic trace, or geology supports an advanced Ice Age global civilization. The theory survives by reframing absence of evidence as evidence of suppression.

Worth asking

Why does the species that invented Atlantis also keep inventing new versions of it, every generation, without fail?
