Greek archōn, ruler, from archein, to be first, was the standard title for magistrates, Athens had nine archons eponymoi, and the year itself was named for the chief one. The gnostic texts, notably the Apocryphon of John, conscript the word for Yaldabaoth's lieutenants: twelve created authorities, Athoth, Harmas, Kalilaumbri, Yabel, Adonaiu, Cain, Abel, Abrisene, Yobel, Armupiel, Melcheir-adonein, and Belias, the first seven set over the seven planetary spheres, the last five over the depths of Hades. Paul already uses rulers of this age in the New Testament, and the archons' job description is administration: keep the luminous spark in Adam ignorant, drunk, and docile.
The archons' real function shows at death: the ascending soul must pass each planetary sphere and answer each warden, and the gnostic systems supply the countersigns, the passwords, seals, and correct answers that get the soul through customs. The Books of Jeu and the Ophite diagrams read like border-crossing manuals, each archon with a name, a face, an animal form, and a fee, payable in gnosis. The folk logic is ancient and blunt: the world is administered, administration is staffed, and staff can be handled if you know the paperwork.
The claim: archon is the archive's cleanest case of a political term doing cosmological work, the rulers of this world named with the same word as the men who audited Athenian grain accounts, and the doctrine beneath it is administration theory, evil as a staffing structure, the cosmos misrun rather than malicious, every modern suspicion that the system is not evil, just managed, already filed in the 2nd century. Verdict: the Apocryphon's own detail convicts or acquits: the archons are not sadists, they are employees, sharing fire but not light, competent enough to build a man, too dim to see why he glows. The border still asks for papers. The passwords, per the manuals, are for sale from the other side.
If the rulers of this world are just middle management with a planetary beat, what does a promotion look like, and who is interviewing?
