Andrew D. Basiago is a real, licensed attorney from Vancouver, Washington, a 2016 independent presidential candidate, and since roughly 2004 a public claimant: childhood participant in a secret program, dressed as a Union bugle boy at Gettysburg, sent forward to 2045. The offices, the candidacy, and the interviews are all documented. The time travel is not.
Basiago points to a famous photograph of the Gettysburg Address crowd showing a small boy, and says the boy is him, physically present in 1863. Believers treat it as the one piece of visual evidence any chrononaut has ever offered. Skeptics note the boy is unidentified, which is not the same as identified.
A cooler reading: the Basiago corpus, hundreds of hours of internally consistent detail, personnel, locations, devices, is less a confession than a constructed epic, and its real subject is how much narrative density a person must produce before consistency starts to feel like evidence.
Is a story this detailed a memory, a fabrication, or a genre wearing a man's name?
