Agent Smith

SMITH
The Matrix's enforcement program, the suited replicator who hates the smell of humanity; the name is the demiurge's trade, smith, the maker, wearing the bureaucracy's other word, agent.
Documented

The maker and the agent

Smith, from smitan, to strike, the smith, the metalworker, is English's most common surname precisely because the craft was everywhere, the maker par excellence, and agent is the bureaucracy's word for one who acts on another's behalf, agere, to do, to drive. The character completes the etymology: a program made by the system to act for it, who confesses to Morpheus his disgust, I can taste your stink, and his desire to escape the Matrix himself, the archon who hates his own jurisdiction, and whose liberation is replication, turning every human into a copy of himself, the maker's final product being only more maker. The film's structure makes him Neo's negative, the anomaly's counterweight, the system and the savior growing equal and opposite, until Revolutions ends them in one cancellation.

Assessment: The surname's etymology, the agent sense, and the character's arc are documented. The archon parallel is the archive's pleroma-wing mapping, the warden who shares fire but not light.
Stories

The warden who caught the prison

The folk reading of Smith is the archive's favorite sympathetic villain file: the enforcement program that internalized the prison so completely it became the bars, his contempt for humanity being the craftsman's contempt for the material, and his replication mania being the archive's control-systems diagnosis embodied, an order so total it has no outside left to enforce against, and therefore no function, the virus the system calls him being just the system with the governor removed. The gnostic shelf's own note: the archons envy the sparks, Smith's hatred being envy documented, he wants what Neo has, an exit, and can only make more inside.

Assessment: The replication arc and the contempt monologue are documented in the films. The envy reading is the tradition's, filed as interpretation with the text quoted.
Interesting claims

The copy that cannot die

The claim: Smith is the archive's model of every enforcer who outlives the authority, the agent who keeps acting after the principal is gone, replication as the only immortality available to a being made of instructions, and the sequels' unresolved note, Smith persisting beyond his deletion, in Resurrections as the system's new partner, being the oldest lesson in the archive's government wing: the enforcement class survives every revolution by renegotiating the terms. Verdict: the archive's verdict is the name's: every age gets the smith it deserves, the maker-enforcer who shapes the bars and then polices them, and the films' one mercy is that he is beatable, not by force, Neo's punches fail, but by absorption, the One letting the maker copy himself onto the savior and canceling both. The gnostics said the wardens cannot hold what recognizes itself. The film said it in leather. Same text, different jar.

Worth asking

If the system's enforcer is named the maker, what did he make, and what made him hate it?
